Part 1:
What were two points from this week's reading that stood out to you as particularly important and interesting?
Why so?
Two points from this week's reading that stand out to me as particularly important and interesting are Taste & Context and Cultural Capital.
The first is about taste and content. Taste is not entirely a personal matter. Numerous societal influences can influence it, and taste can be researched. Investigate taste to learn why people create opinions and attachments to particular media. Studying taste enables us to grow. There are certain media types that are frequently cited as "significant" in media studies. In it, "excellent taste" can be used to dismiss as "unworthy of examination" an entire field of experience.
Cultural capital refers to a person's social assets, such as education, intellect, speech pattern, clothing pattern, etc., that support social mobility in a class-based society. In a customary economy, cultural capital serves as a social relationship and consists of acquiring knowledge that confers social rank and authority.
Part 2:
What is your current favorite television show?
My favorite current television show is Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
What is it about it that makes it “good”?
Keeping Up with the Kardashians is a reality TV show about the life and culture of an American family with controversial dramas and meaningful lessons that any family can have (Wikipedia). With content based on real-life situations, this TV show has cleverly put on television to attract attention and highlight the cultural features of an American family. The show features Kendall Jenner's siblings Kylie Jenner, Kourtney Kardashian, Kim Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian, and Rob Kardashian. Thanks to the engaging, dramatic content and natural acting through the characters in the show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians became a popular and popular TV show, turning the family into a powerful empire. of the Hollywood entertainment industry.
Why do you like it?
I like this show because through each episode, I get inspired and learn many things. In particular, each character is built according to a different personality, representing a different ideology that attracts many audiences. Behind each episode is the effort and dedication of each character. They all became successful on every path they chose and inspired generations to come. In particular, they know how to take advantage of the media to build a strong empire and create a great influence on the entertainment industry. This is something that everyone should pay attention to and learn from.
Is there a context where it would be considered “good taste” and another where it would be considered “bad taste”? Give specific examples.
In terms of "good taste", in the scene where Kendall Jenner celebrates her 16th birthday, she failed her driving test and expressed disappointment with her father. But then, she kept her composure and continued to study for the exam, waiting for the next test. And she finally made it through. This can be considered a fairly casual setting, but the "good taste" point here is that it is highly culturally constructive and legitimate.
In terms of "bad taste," Keeping Up with the Kardashians has been critically panned since its release. It is often criticized for focusing too much on the concept of "famous for being famous" and for seemingly fabricating some aspects of its plot. Especially in the context when sex tapes of Kim Kardashian and R&B singer Ray J were released to the public without their consent (DAILY MAIL REPORTER, 2011). This is seen as sitting in opposition to expectations of 'quality' cinema and is a subculture.
